The web site inlcudes a searchable database of recipients of the Purple Heart and allows people to add their own memorial to those who have sacraficed dearly for freedom.
According to ThePurpleHeart.org, The Purple Heart traces its history to General George Washington who issued a Badge of Military Merit to commemorate acts of valor.
"The General, ever desirous to cherish virtuous ambition in his soldiers as well as foster and encourage every species of military merit, directs that whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear on his facings, over his left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth or silk edged with narrow lace or binding."
The President of the United States continues to bestow the medal to soldiers wounded or killed in the line of in defense of the United States.
